Product
01Will it drain my car battery?
Plugged into the 12V socket, most dash cams switch off with the car. Parking mode needs constant power, usually from a hardwire kit or a battery pack with a low-voltage cutoff that stops before your battery runs low. Check the product page to see how each model is powered.
02Can it read license plates?
It depends on the camera, the distance, your speed and the light. Compare resolution and night specs on the product page. No camera reads every plate at night, so be wary of anyone who promises that.
03What happens when the memory card is full?
Dash cams use loop recording: the oldest regular clips get replaced by new ones. Clips saved by an impact sensor or by pressing the button are locked, so they are not erased. Use a high-endurance card in the size listed on the product page.
04Is it hard to install?
The basic setup is a windshield mount and a cable to the 12V socket, usually done in a few minutes. Tucking the cable along the trim takes a little longer. A hardwire kit is best installed by someone comfortable with a fuse box, or by a car electronics shop.
05Does it handle hot weather?
Heat is hard on any electronics left in a parked car. Check the operating temperature on the product page and park in the shade when you can.
Legal
06Are dash cams legal where I live?
They are legal in most of the US, Europe and Australia, but rules on mounting position, audio recording and sharing footage change by country and state. A few countries, such as Austria, Luxembourg and Portugal, restrict private use. Check your local rules before you drive with one.
07Can I post my footage online?
In Europe, footage that shows faces or license plates counts as personal data. Blur them before posting anything publicly. Handing footage to the police or your insurer is a different situation.
